Safety Boom Installation at Markham Dam

Client

AdorTECH, City of Markham

Location

Toogood Pond, village of Unionville (Markham), Ontario

Project status

Completed in spring 2024

Equinox Construction Services (ECS) was mandated to support the installation of a safety boom system at Markham Dam.

The objective of the project was to improve public safety by installing a floating barrier system upstream of the dam. Safety booms act as protective infrastructure designed to prevent water users from approaching hazardous hydraulic zones near dams and water control structures.

The project required careful coordination between engineering teams, fabrication suppliers, and field crews to deliver a robust system adapted to river conditions and operational constraints.

The Challenge: Enhancing Safety Around a Hydraulic Structure

Dams create powerful hydraulic conditions that can pose risks to the public if safety zones are not clearly established and protected.

At Markham Dam, the objective was to install a floating safety boom capable of clearly defining the restricted area upstream of the structure while withstanding fluctuating water levels and seasonal environmental conditions.

The system had to remain reliable throughout varying river flows and environmental loads such as floating debris and ice. The installation therefore required careful planning, durable anchoring solutions, and close coordination between design, fabrication, and field operations.

Ensuring long-term reliability while minimizing operational constraints for the dam was a key aspect of the project.

Intervention by Equinox Construction Services

Equinox Construction Services coordinated the implementation of the safety boom system, ensuring that all phases of the project were executed efficiently and safely.

Our team supervised the planning of installation activities, coordinated the fabrication and supply of the floating boom components, and oversaw the field installation. Detailed installation methodologies and safety procedures were developed to guide field operations and ensure compliance with dam safety requirements.

Through careful sequencing and site coordination, the system was successfully installed and integrated into the existing infrastructure.

The completed safety boom now provides a reliable protective barrier upstream of Markham Dam, contributing to improved public safety around the hydraulic structure.

Services Provided

  • Managed the logistics, timing and delivery of the boom
  • Carried out the assembly and installation
  • Adjusted the work methods to suit unforeseen site conditions
  • Determined an alternative scenario moving forward

Improving Public Safety Through Hydraulic Infrastructure Protection

Safety booms play an essential role in protecting the public around dams and hydraulic control structures. By creating a clear and reliable physical barrier upstream of the structure, they help prevent accidental access to hazardous hydraulic zones.

At Markham Dam, Equinox Construction Services applied its field experience in hydraulic infrastructure projects to deliver a safety system adapted to the site’s environmental conditions and operational constraints.

Through coordinated planning, rigorous construction supervision, and proactive risk management, ECS ensured the successful integration of the safety boom system.

Our experience with dam safety infrastructure enables us to provide reliable, durable solutions that enhance safety while maintaining operational performance.
